Royal County Down: the visitor's guide

What it is

Royal County Down is a links course (built on sandy ground by the sea) at Newcastle, on the shore of Dundrum Bay in County Down, Northern Ireland. The Mourne Mountains sit behind it. It has two courses: the Championship course, which is the one every ranking measures, and the shorter Annesley course alongside it.

Four separate rankings, NCG, Today's Golfer, Top100GolfCourses and Golf Monthly, currently place the Championship course first in Great Britain and Ireland. It's a working members' club, not a museum piece: it takes visitors five days a week, with a caddie compulsory for every group.

How the course plays

The Championship course is 7,206 yards from the back (Blue) tees, playing to a par of 71, with a printed slope rating (a number showing how much harder a course plays for an average golfer than for a scratch player) of 145 off those tees. Shorter tees bring it down to 6,925 (White) and 6,668 (Yellow) yards.

The course runs through some of the biggest dunes in links golf, with gorse and heather either side of narrow fairways and bunkers edged with overhanging marram grass. The ninth is the hole most people know: a 486 yard par 4 played blind over a dune to a fairway roughly 60 feet below, then a second shot over two bunkers to a raised green. Its history

The club was founded on 23 March 1889. Old Tom Morris of St Andrews was brought over that year to advise on a layout, for a fee the club capped at £4, and an 18-hole course was ready by the middle of 1890. George Combe reshaped the second nine between 1900 and 1912 with help from Sandy Herd, James Braid and Harry Vardon, among others. Harry Colt redesigned the front nine in 1926, creating new 4th and 9th holes; since then the only significant change has been a rerouting of the 16th in 2004 (Royal County Down, Club History timeline, checked 23 Sep 2026).

The club has never hosted The Open Championship, but it has hosted almost everything else. The British Ladies' Amateur Championship was played here a record nine times between 1899 and 2006. The Irish Open has been held five times, most recently in 2015 (hosted by Rory McIlroy) and 2024, when McIlroy lost by a shot to Denmark's Rasmus Højgaard. The Amateur Championship came in 1970, when Michael Bonallack won his fifth and final title, and again in 1999. The Senior Open Championship was played here three years running, 2000 to 2002. The Curtis Cup came in 1968, the Walker Cup in 2007 (Rory McIlroy's last event as an amateur), the Palmer Cup in 2012 and the European Ladies' Team Championship in 2021.

Playing it as a visitor

Visitors play the Championship course on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday; Wednesday and Saturday are for members. There's no online tee sheet: you fill in a booking enquiry form on the club's website with your preferred date, and the club's Reservations Team checks what's available. The site warns that availability is, in its own words, exceptionally limited.

The green fee for the Championship course is £450 for the 2026 season, 20 April to 16 October, rising to £495 for the same period in 2027. The Annesley course is £120 in 2026 and £150 in 2027. Club hire is £70 and an electric trolley is £40; buggies aren't allowed anywhere on the course.

Every group needs at least one caddie. A single caddie costs £75 and a forecaddie, shared across a full group, costs £110, paid in cash at the end of the round; there's no cash machine on site, though there are some in Newcastle. If you haven't booked a caddie in advance, the club will assign a forecaddie to your group. All play is in groups of up to four (Royal County Down, Enquiry page, checked 23 Sep 2026).

Dress is traditional: collared shirts (sleeveless is fine for women if collared), tailored trousers, shorts, skirts or skorts. Blue denim, collarless t-shirts, cargo shorts, tracksuits, leggings, flip-flops and slides aren't allowed, soft spikes are advised, and hats come off indoors. Getting there

By road, the A24 runs south from Belfast through Carryduff and Ballynahinch and becomes the A2 at Clough, about 30 miles and 45 minutes to Newcastle.

Newcastle has no railway station of its own; the line that once served it closed decades ago. The nearest mainline rail hub is Belfast Grand Central, and Translink's Goldline Express coach service 237 runs directly between Belfast Grand Central and Newcastle Bus Station several times a day, and takes a little over an hour.

By air, Belfast City Airport is the closest at around 28 miles straight-line, Belfast International is about 33 miles, and Dublin Airport is about 57 miles.

Where to stay

Slieve Donard, now run as Marine & Lawn, stands next to the course on the site of what used to be the club's 1st and 18th holes. Burrendale Hotel, Country Club & Spa is about 1.5 miles from the clubhouse, in Newcastle. Enniskeen Country House Hotel is about 1.3 miles out, in the Shimna valley on the edge of town.

When to go

The visitor season runs from 20 April to 16 October each year, so outside that window the Championship course isn't open to visitor bookings at all (Royal County Down, Enquiry page, checked 23 Sep 2026). Within the season, visitor days are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

Events

Golf Metric found no confirmed 2027 tournament at Royal County Down on the club's own site or on the R&A's published list of 2027 amateur championship venues. The Irish Open has returned here twice in the last decade, in 2015 and 2024, without a fixed cycle, so it's worth checking the DP World Tour's own schedule nearer the time.
