Yes, plenty. Warren in Wallasey is a 9-hole links run by Wirral Council, and Pennington Flash in Leigh is Wigan Council's 9-hole course, £6.50 on a weekday. The Crawford course at Haigh Hall, Westminster Park and Adlington's two courses are par 3s: every hole is a short one, so the round is played with irons and a putter rather than a driver. Allerton Manor's 9-hole course, Portal's Arderne and most of the pay-and-play courses above are full length, played the same way as any 18-hole course, just over 9 holes.
Playing 9 holes at an 18-hole course
Some courses sell a 9-hole round outright rather than making you pay for 18. On a weekday Bootle charges £12 for 9 holes against £16 for 18, Southport Golf Links £11 against £19, and Walton Hall £13 against £25. Towneley in Burnley is £17 for 9 holes in summer against £25 for 18. If a course does not list a 9-hole rate, ask in the pro shop: many will still let you play a short round, especially later in the day.
Who a short round suits
A 9-hole course is a practical choice if you are new to the game, short on time, or playing with younger children who cannot manage a full round. Arrowe Park's pitch and putt in particular needs no experience and no equipment of your own: you pay at reception, collect a putter and a wedge, and play a short, forgiving course built for beginners of any age.
For juniors and older golfers
A 9-hole round is often the easiest way for a child or an older golfer to start playing regularly. Pennington Flash charges £5 for 11 to 15 year olds on a weekday, Clarkes £5 for under-12s, Sandfield £9 for juniors, and for over-66s on weekday daytimes, and Marton Meadows £10.50 for juniors and over-60s. At Bacup a junior plays free alongside a paying adult. Arrowe Park's pitch and putt family ticket, two adults and two children, is £14.80.
Alvaston Hall near Nantwich used to have a 9-hole course at the hotel; the hotel's own site no longer lists golf there, so we have left it out.

How long does a 9-hole round take?
Around 90 minutes to two hours for most players, roughly half an 18-hole round. That makes it a practical option after work or with young children, when a full round would not fit.
Are 9-hole courses easier than 18-hole courses?
Not always. A pitch and putt like Arrowe Park's is short and forgiving, played with a putter and a wedge, but a full-length 9-hole course such as Allerton Manor's or Portal's Arderne is played with a full set and tests you just as much, hole for hole.
Do I need my own clubs for a 9-hole round?
Not at a pitch and putt: Arrowe Park lends you a putter and a wedge at reception. At a full-length 9-hole course bring your own, or ask the course first: most do not hire clubs.
Can I play just 9 holes at an 18-hole course?
Often, yes. Bootle and Southport Golf Links, both Sefton Council courses, Walton Hall in Warrington and Towneley in Burnley all sell a 9-hole rate, and plenty of other clubs will let you play a shorter round if you ask in the pro shop.
