What golf actually costs, at a glance

Every figure above is what that provider had on its own website on the date shown. Prices change, especially green fees by season, so treat this as a guide and check the source before you book.

Buckets of balls

Range prices vary by bay and ball count more than by location. Croft Golf Centre in Warrington is the cheapest of the six North West ranges Golf Metric tracks, at £4 for 50 balls or £6 for 100. A lesson

Croft Golf Centre in Warrington publishes lessons with its PGA professional, Anthony Sproston, "starting from only £15" (checked 23 Sep 2026). That's one data point, not a national average: coaches set their own rates, and a course of lessons costs more than a single session. PGA Play is the way to find and compare professionals near you.

A pay-and-play round

Haigh Hall in Wigan, run by the council through Haigh Woodland Park, prices its 18-hole Balcarres course at £19.50 on a weekday up to twilight, £11.50 after twilight, and £24.50 on a weekend (Summer 2026 prices, checked 23 Sep 2026). Pay-and-play prices like this are typically a third to a tenth of a members' club visitor fee, because there's no clubhouse subscription behind them. A visitor round at a members' club

At the top end, an Open venue charges accordingly. Royal Birkdale's own visitors page prices an 18-hole round at £495 up to the end of October 2026, dropping to £450 in April 2027 before returning to £495 from May (checked 22 Sep 2026). Wednesdays are sold only as a £565 package. Most members' clubs in the North West charge well under that; check the club's own page before you book, since Golf Metric doesn't hold a verified green fee for every course in the directory yet.

Membership

A club membership is really two costs: a one-off joining fee and an annual subscription, and both vary hugely by club. Warrington Golf Club's 2026 fees, published on its own site, are £1,560 a year for Full Playing membership, with a £1,575 one-off joining fee and a 10% clubhouse subscription added on top of the annual figure. Younger-age categories are cheaper: £480 a year for 18 to 21 year olds, rising to £900 for 26 to 29 year olds, and a Country Membership (for those living 50 miles or more from the club) at £400. We haven't found a named survey of average UK membership costs to add a general figure here; if you know of one, that's a gap Chris can fill.

Junior membership

Costs are usually far lower for children, and some clubs waive them entirely to get juniors started. Dean Wood Golf Club in Upholland offers free membership for juniors up to age 12 as an introductory 2026 offer. Warrington Golf Club charges £145 a year for juniors aged 10 to 14 and £165 for 15 to 17 year olds. See our page on junior golf in the North West for programmes as well as costs.

An official handicap without a club

If you want an official handicap but don't want to join a club, England Golf's iGolf scheme costs £47 a year.
