The best time of year to play links golf in the UK

The short version

On the North West coast, the calmest, driest golfing weather runs from around May to July. Rain picks up into autumn, the ground softens, and wind speeds rise through winter. Green fees run the other way: several links clubs on this coast charge their lowest prices exactly when the weather is at its worst, and their highest in June to August.

Firmness: driest months versus wettest

Links courses sit on free-draining sandy soil, which is why they play firm and run fast compared with a parkland course even after rain. How firm changes through the year with how much rain has actually fallen. The Met Office's 30-year average for Crosby, on the Sefton coast near Formby and Hillside, puts April at 49.8 mm of rain and May at 52.5 mm, the two driest months measured. Rainfall then climbs through autumn to a peak of 91.9 mm in December and 89.7 mm in October. A links fairway in late spring has usually had weeks of that lighter rainfall to firm back up; by November it has had months of the wetter end.

Wind: a real but modest seasonal swing

The same Crosby data shows average wind speed at 13.16 knots in January, falling through the year to 10.70 knots in May and 10.83 knots in June, before climbing back to 12.52 knots in December. Converted to mph, that is roughly 15 mph in midwinter against 12 to 13 mph in late spring and early summer: a real difference, but not a huge one, and only an average across many days. Daylight: how much round you can fit in

Longer days matter as much as calmer weather. Sunset on the Sefton coast runs from under 16:00 in early January to past 21:00 for most of June, which changes how late you can reasonably tee off and still finish in daylight. The full last tee time before dark table has the figure for every fortnight of the year.

Price: the trade-off runs the other way

Several clubs on this coast charge the most exactly when conditions are best. West Lancashire, at Blundellsands, prices an 18-hole weekday round at £250 from May to September 2026, dropping to £200 in October, then to £120 from November 2026 to February 2027 (that price includes tea, coffee and a bacon roll), before climbing back through March and April. The club notes on its own fees page that winter is also when maintenance work, including work on the greens, gets done.

Fleetwood, on the Fylde coast, runs three tiers rather than two: £70 a round in its June to September peak, £60 in its March, April, May and October off-peak months, and £40 in its November to February winter period, each for one to three golfers, with a further discount for groups of four or more. Both clubs' own fee pages give exact dates, so check the club directly before you book, since none of these prices are fixed year to year.

Putting it together

If firm ground, calm wind and long daylight matter most to you, aim for May to July and expect to pay the most for it. If price matters more than conditions, autumn is a reasonable middle ground on both counts, and winter is where the biggest savings sit, alongside the shortest days, the softest ground and the highest chance of a temporary green or a trolley restriction; see temporary greens, trolley bans and preferred lies for what that means on the day.
